Very cool read…  http://www.tummy.com/Community/Articles/pycon2007-network/

Hopefully the Bourquin brothers, who produce the PPME — er PNME*,  take note this year…  last year’s WiFi coverage was absolutely horrible.

* Third name change in 3 years, can’t wait to see what next year’s name will be.  ;-)

Interesting that he notes that he has 6X a T1’s bandwidth at home… Maybe he’s able to pull that down (Did I tell you I pulled 14 Mbps down the other day?!) but I seriously doubt that hes putting 9Mbps up with just a standard cable connection… Although that would be pretty sweet. I could go for a T3 to the house, I’m not sure what I’d do with it…

Oh and 802.11a is a personal fav. It may not have the signal propogation of b/g but 8 usable channels is so much better than 3!

  2. It really depends, in September after all the students come to town the service really tends to be slow, maybe only 2 to 3mbps in. I have regularly downloaded large files at 1MB/sec.

It really depends on the remote end as well though. At our hosting facility where I have dual, dual redundant 100mbps connections (400mbps in total), our mirror server can only get a few megabits when talking to the fedora mirror server. It’s just overloaded…

Part of why we pay the extra for the 8mbps service is that it nearly doubles the outbound, from 500-ish kbps to 900kbps. That really helps with pushing out things and the line staying responsive. That’s the big benefit of a business-class service, the outbound. I’ve thought about getting one of the $100 “T1″ services that I’ve seen just to get the 1.5mbps out.

Anyway, that’s my story. Yes, I can actually get 8mbps on large downloads.

The point really was that the hotel had pathetic net connectivity, not that my home service is 8mbps. I’ve got quotes for next year for getting a DS3 in to the hotel. Because the new hotel has basically told us “We can’t handle it” now that they know what is involved.

No, I was talking about putting up, as in uploading. Not downloading. That was all. Mostly I was being a smart ass. Sorry for the confusion. We have a couple OC192’s at work. Now thats some speed for ya! (of course we also have about 550 locations that link up to us, each with multiple T1’s…)
