#100daysofscouting – Days 18 & 19

The last 2 days I…

- Continued working on the pack web site adding lots of content for recruiting purposes.  It’ll be interesting to receive feedback.

- Arranged to meet with the District Training Chair to exchange information needing to be conveyed to the district on Saturday morning during the District Planning Meeting.  Seems within a week I’ve been added to the District Training Team and will be representing that team and presenting our plan of attack.  Should be interesting to say the least.

Interestingly, my conversation with the District Training Chair took an unpredicted turn.  While sharing with me the importance of Instructor-Led Training (ILT) over eLearning I shared with him my choice to stay with my Pack in the capacity of Pack Trainer for similar reasons so as to pass along the knowledge I’ve gained over my tenure with the pack so folks wouldn’t have to bang their heads like I did.  He then asked if our Pack had a Unit Commissioner.  I haven’t seen one in my time with the pack so my response was no.  He stated that I should reconsider my role as Pack Trainer and instead take on the role of Unit Commissioner.  I’d be able to do the same thing, but work more at the District level and be exposed to more packs and different ways of doing things.

Based on what I’ve read on what a Unit Commissioner does, I question my being ready for such a position.  My goal is to keep the pack healthy until my youngest son makes it through the program while at the same time being involved with the Troop my older son is crossing to.  As Pack Trainer and Troop Adult Training Coordinator that should keep me involved with both programs to fulfill my goal.  But I wonder if volunteering for the District Training Team might be a little too much.  The last thing I want to do is take away any more time from the family.  I’m going to have to watch this one closely.  If I were to take on Unit Commissioner, I have no idea of what sort of time commitment I’d be looking at and that concerns me.  I’ll likely be ready for a commissioner role some day, but I’m not so sure that day is right now though.
