Mind Mapping Software

Recently, Mindjet provided George and myself with complimentary copies of their software, MindManager.  I’m using the Windows version while George is using the Mac version.

Over on 43 Folders today, there is a post regarding Mind Mapping software like this.  I too have used one of the free tools, but this is the first time I’ve used one of the commercial ones.

Many of our R&D folks at work have been requesting this software, so this was a great time to be presented with the opportunity to work with the software. I’ve already used it for a couple of projects, in one instance to create a checklist for the Firewall reconfig, and the other instance to outline my upcoming presentation.

Of course, this software can do quite a bit more, so hopefully, as opportunities arise, I’ll be able to push the software to see what all it can do.  The greatest challenge thus far though has been altering the way I think about things in order to map them.  If nothing else, it’s been incredibly helpful in catching things that might have fallen through the cracks.

Once I clean it up a bit, I’ll release my firewall reconfig checklist as a PDF once I’ve sanitized it.  Perhaps someone else can find some use in it, if not directly, at least as an idea.

Also, George and I plan on trying to use the two different platforms in a collaborative effort with the show and its planning.  We’ll talk about that more when that time arrives.

One Response to Mind Mapping Software

Now that you’ve had it for a while, how’s this working out, Kevin? If you didn’t have a free copy, would MindManager be worth the price of admission over the free tools, out there?

Currently, when I need to create a checklist or outline, I just turn on MS Word’s Numbering. ( What’s up w/ Word’s Outline View, anyway? If I want to view it heirarchically, why would I want to flatten it out to print it?
